Höpfner, Carl (1823-1892) Germany

Carl Christian Bernhard Höpfner was born on June 7th, 1823 as the second son of the teacher and deputy headmaster Eduard Höpfner, who received the honorary citizenship of Jena. Carl Höpfner worked as a Rendant of the State Hospitals as well as Treasurer and Accounting Officer of the Grand Ducal Museums and Scientific Institutions in Jena. He wrote a number of documented operettas, musical comedies, male choruses and songs with piano accompaniment. He is listed as composer and poet in relevant libraries. Commissioner Höpfner died in Jena on March 15th, 1892.
 
Until the publication of the edition “Drei launige Männergesänge” by choris mundi in 2021, the said composition op.15, Höpfner’s life data could not be found. The editor supposed the originator's living environment to be in the Jena area, as the   composition in question op.15 was dedicated to the "Liedertafel zu Jena" in the print by the music publisher Conrad Glaser.
Research in numerous libraries was unsuccessful. By chance, the editor discovered an article about the deputy headmaster E. Höpfner’s 50th office anniversary in the Church and School Gazette from 1864, in the online archive of the Thuringian University and State Library in Jena. It says that on that day when Eduard Höpfner was awarded honorary citizenship of Jena, the „Liedertafel“ sang as part of the festive event. Among other things, a cantata composed by Eduard Höpfner's second son (Rendant in Jena) just for the occasion. The life data and professions of Eduard Höpfner’s children, including Carl Höpfner, the person wanted, could thus be determined via the Jena City Archives.
