Dr Wolfgang Horlbeck was born in Reichenbach/Vogtland in 1944. His professional career began with the final university degree as a teacher for musical education in Berlin-Pankow, followed by a position as a music teacher at schools near his hometown. There, he directed different vocal ensembles and qualified for choir and ensemble direction in an additional postgraduate course at the College of Music “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin. In 1974, he began as a lecturer at the pedagogical college in Zwickau, where he also received his doctor’s degree in pedagogy. After the German reunification, he worked as a discipline leader of music at the Clara Wieck Gymnasium Zwickau and taught music history, music theory and social studies. In his hometown, he took over the direction of the women’s choir Reichenbach/V. and composed several choral movements especially for this ensemble.
Dr Horlbeck was retired in 2009, but continued to work as a dramatic adviser for the Vogtland Philharmonic Orchestra until 2020. In 2021 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his outstanding commitment to his homeland, culture and social interaction. In the same year Wolfgang Horlbeck died in Reichenbach.
