Gustav Meinel was born in 1871 in Schneeberg / Saxony. After attending the teachers' seminary in Chemnitz, he studied music at the Leipzig Conservatory.
From 1895-1937 he worked as choirmaster and organist at St. Mark's Church in Chemnitz. In addition to the mixed choir of his chanty, he headed the Singakademie Chemnitz and the choir of the Chemnitz home for the Blind.
Gustav Meinel was awarded the honorary title director of church music for his church music merit.
He died in 1952 in Chemnitz.
