Bräutigam, Volker (1939-2022) Germany

Volker Bräutigam
born in Frohnau / Erzgebirge in 1939, was a member of the Dresdner Kreuzchor under Rudolf Mauersberger. He studied church music and composition at the Leipzig University of Music from 1957 to 1962, including with Johannes Weyrauch. After graduating summa cum laude, Bräutigam was a church musician at the Heilandskirche in Leipzig-Plagwitz for 30 years, as the successor to Johannes Weyrauch.
From 1981 to 1994 he taught as a lecturer and from 1992 as a professor at the University of Music in Leipzig, from 1981 also at the Evangelical University of Church Music in Halle and held a professorship here from 1995. He continued to work at both institutions long after his retirement. Bräutigam has performed as a concert organist in many countries in Europe, Asia and the USA.
His compositional work is stylistically diverse. In addition to his admiration for the neo-baroque church music of Siegfried Reda, Ernst Pepping and Johann Nepomuk David as well as the works of Olivier Messiaen, influences from early music and jazz can be seen. In addition to choral and organ works, he also created music for DEFA cartoons. His best-known work is the Gospel music for Bach's St. Mark Passion.
Volker Braut's grave is in the Leipzig South Cemetery.
