Prof. Dr Volker Hahn was born on 15th June 1940 in Einsiedel near Chemnitz. From 1961–1967, he studied composition, music theory, piano and conducting at the Dresden Academy of Music. In 1967, he concluded his four-year studies at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. Here he became Rudolf Wagner’s and Johann Regeny Cilensek’s master student in composition. After his dissertation as a Doctor of Philosophy in 1987, Volker Hahn worked at the Dresden Academy of Music from 1992–2005. As a Chairman of the Commission of Composition and Music Theory, he received a professorship in 1993 and was elected Dean of the Academy for Composition in 1999.
Apart from his juror activities at numerous national and international choir competitions, he served as a board member of the Saxon Music Council from 1994–2007.
In addition to his orchestral and chamber music, he created numerous works of vocal music, among them   accompanied solo songs, cantatas, motets and folk-song sets.
